University House was the first major building constructed for the Australian National University and remains one of the institution's most significant places. Designed by architect Brian Lewis and opened in 1954, it was conceived as a residential and social centre for academic life, drawing inspiration from British faculty clubs while establishing a distinctly Australian identity. Recognised on the Commonwealth Heritage List and awarded the 1953 Sir John Sulman Medal, University House is notable for its architecture, interiors, courtyards, gardens, artworks and furniture collection.
Following a catastrophic hail storm in 2020 which instigated the project, over a six-year period, Lovell Chen provided heritage and architectural services for a major program of conservation, remediation and refurbishment works. The project sought to conserve the building's heritage significance while ensuring it continues to support contemporary accommodation, hospitality, ceremonial and community functions.
