The Birch Building at the Australian National University (ANU) Acton Campus, ACT, was constructed for the Research School of Chemistry (RSC) and opened in late 1968.   Renowned Modernist architects Eggleston, Macdonald and Secomb (EMS) designed the RSC building in two volumes, reflecting the main functions of the RSC: teaching and research. The Stripped Classical style main building housed teaching and laboratory spaces, with the lecture theatre and library accommodated within the inverted pyramid volume. Set in a complementary designed landscape, the building is a well-resolved and striking mid-twentieth century design. The Birch Building was developed at a time of significant growth for the ANU at the Acton campus and it is one of several important mid-twentieth century buildings at the University.  The Birch Building was identified as having potential heritage values in the ANU Acton Campus Heritage Framework (Lovell Chen, 2019).
