An understanding of place and history is foundational to Lovell Chen’s practice. This includes acknowledging that we work on unceded Aboriginal land. In our journey towards reconciliation, we challenge ourselves, our clients, and industry peers to deepen our understanding through meaningful engagement, improving cultural safety, and developing ongoing, collaborative relationships with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on whose lands we work.

We began formalising a Reconciliation Action Plan in 2019. We see it as our responsibility to address the hard issues and embed what we’ve learned about assessing significance, designing, working or co-designing with communities and developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with Traditional Owners.

We believe that heritage can serve as a catalyst for positive change — a force for good at a time of considerable social and environmental flux. As we reimagine the potential of existing buildings and places, our office is committed to carbon reduction-led design and ecological regeneration. We translate learning to action, exemplified by our leadership in integrating a fabric-first approach to retrofitting heritage and existing buildings.  

We hold ourselves accountable and are improving project by project — continually extending our skills, ambitions, and practices to elevate our effectiveness in renewing places, communities, and ecosystems.
