Kai Chen
Founding Principal & Director

Registered Architect (TAS 875, VIC 13387)

An instinctive designer, passionate about good design and new ideas, Chen's ability to solve complex architectural challenges underpins Lovell Chen's success in the adaptation, extension and refurbishment of heritage buildings and places.

His approach is characterised by his ability to think strategically for clients, and by his skill at 'reading' an existing structure, understanding its context and working with what's already there. He works collaboratively with the whole project team, including the contractor, seeing design and construction as a continuous process. The results have a timeless quality, with a serenity that seems effortless.

Kate Gray
Director

Kate is an historian with a post graduate qualification in heritage planning and management. She brings 35 years’ experience in cultural heritage practice to her work in heritage assessment, the provision of high-level strategic advice, and the identification and management of heritage sites and places.

Kate leads a multi-disciplinary team of specialists producing heritage reports and advice, including heritage impact statements, management plans, municipal heritage studies, heritage appraisals, options assessments, and submissions to panels and hearings. In addition, she provides specialist technical advice for major infrastructure projects.

Adam Mornement
Director

Adam has 20 years’ experience in professional heritage practice. He has emerged as a key participant in the development of heritage policy, heritage management planning and conceptions of social value in heritage settings, and he is an experienced writer and author.

Adam develops strategies for the adaptive re-use of heritage buildings, and policies and management guidelines for the delivery of conservation objectives in multilayered urban contexts. Core components of his work also include conservation, heritage and asset management plans, heritage assessments and urban heritage studies.

Anne-Marie Treweeke
Director

Registered Architect (ACT ADR no.00578660, NSW DR 15206, QLD 6413, TAS 876, VIC 15206, WA 2312)

Anne-Marie is central to the decision-making processes of the practice, drawing on more than 30 years' experience in architecture and strategic and master planning. A skilled critical analyst with considerable insight into the way the construction industry operates.

Her work includes the direction of multi-disciplinary teams for the planning, design, refurbishment, adaptation and conservation of buildings and places, including significant institutional buildings and large-scale complex sites. She is particularly experienced in the adaptation of buildings for new uses, conservation architecture, working in heritage contexts, and the challenges of climate change in the context of the built environment and its structures of all periods.

Katherine White
Director

Katherine is a skilled strategic heritage planner, a field she has been working in for more than 15 years and leads Lovell Chen project teams focussing on heritage approvals. She is a Registered Planner and has particular expertise in the assessment of heritage impacts and the preparation of planning and heritage permit applications.

Katherine is also experienced in the delivery of expert evidence for panels and hearings, and in the peer review of projects with complex heritage issues. She also contributes to heritage studies, conservation and heritage management plans.

Milica Tumbas
Principal

Milica has over 35 years’ experience in architecture, heritage conservation and adaptive reuse and leads a team of architects and conservation specialists. She works on all phases of projects, co-ordinating the multidisciplinary team and delivering award winning new buildings and extensions, refurbishment works and adaptation projects.

Her work includes architectural design, design development, consultant liaison, documentation and contract administration. She is a certified PassivHaus designer.

Michael Cook
Associate Principal

Michael leads complex projects in strategic planning, heritage management and statutory approvals. A registered landscape architect, he draws on a professional background in urban design and infrastructure planning, as well as extensive engagement with environmental management and ecology, infrastructure and industrial heritage, and twentieth century architecture and urban space. Michael provides specialist advice, and leads major projects in the heritage sector, including strategies, heritage studies and assessments, management plans, and complex heritage approvals.

Stuart Hanafin
Associate Principal

Registered Architect (ACT ADR no.00588537, VIC 19773)

Stuart is a highly experienced member of our multi-disciplinary architecture and conservation team. He leads projects focused on the conservation, refurbishment and adaptation of buildings in heritage contexts that require detailed knowledge of conservation methodologies as well as architectural skills. His work involves the preparation of condition surveys and reports, advice, documentation and tender documents, and he undertakes programming, client liaison, consultant coordination, construction services and contract administration.

Tina Tam
Associate Principal

Tina is a pivotal member of our multi-disciplinary architecture and conservation team. She works on the concept design, documentation and contract administration of new build and adaptive reuse projects in heritage contexts, and is a key contributor in the delivery of major architectural projects. She has been instrumental in our approach to sustainability, embedding it into the way we design and practice, making it an attitude of mind and developing evidence-based sustainability goals. Tina is a certified PassivHaus designer.

Suzanne Zahra
Associate Principal

Registered Architect (QLD 6475, VIC 16172)

Central to Suzanne's work is the assessment of the scope for adaptation of heritage buildings, particularly post-war structures. She often works on the adaptive reuse and/or refurbishment of large scale complexes, such as university campuses, and is responsible for the delivery of heritage services in relation to many of Melbourne’s major infrastructure projects.

Her work often starts at the strategic level, helping determine strategic direction, then delivering on specific projects. She advises on all heritage aspects, assists in applications for approvals, and works closely with our architecture team during construction phases and is highly experienced in the provision of conservation and heritage management plans, and heritage planning assessments.

Libby Blamey
Senior Associate

Libby is a professional historian with nearly 20 years’ experience in the built heritage industry. Her work underpins the work of the heritage team and contributes to conservation and heritage management plans, heritage policy development, municipal heritage studies, predictive archaeological studies, land use histories for large infrastructure projects, heritage assessments, oral histories and submissions to tribunals and hearings. Her role includes the preparation of histories for heritage buildings and places, and setting them in their wider historical and social contexts.

Maxwell Bracher
Senior Associate

Registered Architect (VIC 800430)

Max works in our multi-disciplinary architecture and conservation team taking a lead role in delivering conservation-focused work for projects with great architectural and technical diversity and complexity. He is involved in every step of delivery — from procurement, scoping and condition surveys to reporting, documentation, tender processes, construction services and contract administration.

Michelle Knehans
Senior Associate

Michelle is an experienced member of our multi-disciplinary heritage team. She is a heritage consultant with a background in archaeological research, working on analysis and the provision of heritage advice and reports. Many of the projects she contributes to involve the provision of technical heritage advice for complex sites, major public infrastructure and/or adaptive reuse schemes. This includes preparation of predictive archaeological assessments, heritage appraisals, heritage impact statements, and heritage and planning applications and appeals.

Audrey Ong
Senior Associate

Audrey is a key member of our architecture and conservation team, managing projects that range from small detailed conservation works to large-scale conservation and adaptation schemes in heritage contexts. As a project architect her work encompasses undertaking surveys and condition assessments, detailed documentation, tender processes, contract administration, client liaison, consultant coordination and construction services.
