The City of Casey, in Melbourne’s outer south-east, is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the state of Victoria. There are over 180 places protected under Casey’s heritage overlay. The City has released its new handbook — developed and written by Lovell Chen in association with the Council — to help local owners of heritage properties understand their obligations, how to approach caring for their buildings and the relevant planning processes.
The handbook was recognised in this year’s PIA VIC Awards for Planning Excellence in the Improving Planning Processes category with a commendation.
In preparing practical guidelines, we went back to first principles with the aim of supporting owners in identifying heritage features, and planning maintenance and building works. Guidance is provided on renovation, extension and making changes to heritage buildings, and we worked closely with the City to understand common local scenarios and answer frequently asked questions.
