Conservation works in service of asset adaptation and renewal

The structural works included jacking to reset the roof ridgeline to level, strengthening of the trusses with steel plates and connections, and full replacement of the termite impacted timber columns and capitals, matching the original detailing.

External works included installation of new roof skylights, a new roof plant platform to accommodate the plant required for the building's change of use and removal and replacement of roof cladding and rainwater goods. The original steel gutter has been retained, restored and a new gutter inserted inside it to meet compliance requirements.

Later additions and redundant elements have been removed, including an annex on the west elevation, and modifications to the external railway platform. Elsewhere, the bluestone was repaired and repointed, including on the external railway platform.

The building has a series of external doors, not all required for the change of use. They are now a combination of fixed open with new doors installed in the opening, or fixed shut but still operable. Paint analysis was undertaken to establish the original colour scheme, which has been reinstated.

In keeping with its original use as a goods shed, the building has an internal rail platform which is not really compatible with the change of use, but a significant heritage element to be retained. The platform has been largely repaired, and the internal space was then backfilled to enable a uniform floor level. The eastern entry to the building retains the original external level at the point of entry. The bluestone has been repaired and repointed.
