Among the first buildings erected for the University of Melbourne
was the Old Quadrangle Building, a fine example of Gothic Revival style, constructed in Tasmanian sandstone. It was built between 1854-57, with additions dating from 1875, 1930 and 1970. In 1993, we were commissioned to advise on the conservation works and to assess and document the restoration and reconstruction.
Following a survey and estimation of the scope of work, a comprehensive specification was developed to include consolidation, plastic repair, stone replacement and stabilisation. Testing and analysis preceded the selection of a suitable replacement sandstone. It was agreed that the conservation project would proceed in six stages, most of which have been successfully completed. The final stage is planned for 2007.
