HURLEY HOUSE
architecture
Brighton, Melbourne
A house designed for a young family who are keen
collectors of modern art. It is based around a series of courtyards of differing scales and intensities. The two single storey pavilions were inspired by the iwans of traditional Iranian architecture, with porches and totemic columns symbolically announcing and 'purifying'
the courtyards they face.
At the front, the kitchen and service yard are hidden from view by a mirrored wall running beside the entrance path. The red front door lies between the two wings. To the right are the formal living room, the parent's suite with its moondeck and an internal courtyard. The central hallway leads on from the front door. To the left is the children's wing.
The house is located in a beachside suburb of Melbourne,
where vacant plots are rarely available. This one had an existing dwelling, which was demolished, apart from its garage. Retaining the garage meant that the new pavilions were considered
an extension, simplifying planning issues.
