Swanston Street, Melbourne
client City of Melbourne
Melbourne's Town Hall, once Council-run, is now managed
by a commercial operator and has to succeed in a competitive market. Our work on the interior was therefore driven by both conservation and practical operational considerations.
We restored the main hall and its nationally significant
concert organ, provided new foyers and a bar, replanned some areas to make the most of the spaces facing Swanston and Collins Streets, improved internal circulation, upgraded building services and improved the public function rooms so they can cater for a wide range of uses, from exhibitions to receptions.
Back-of-house, we designed new commercial kitchens, dressing
rooms and toilets. In the hall, stage equipment and lighting has been upgraded and a hydraulic hoist installed.
One of Melbourne's most important
heritage buildings now has a major venue.
