The University of Melbourne
29-55 College Crescent, Parkville, Melbourne
Ormond College, originally designed by Reed and Barnes (1879-81),
is a landmark of high Victorian Gothic architecture. The last major phase of works at the college was undertaken during the 1950s-60s and designed by Roy Grounds, Frederick Romberg and
Robin Boyd.
Lovell Chen has provided heritage advice and architectural services for various projects at the college. In 2003 and 2004, we prepared the Ormond College Conservation Management Plan (Vols 1 & IIa). We have also provided advice and architectural services in relation to the creation of additional student living areas, and the refurbishment of the J.M. Young Room at the college library, to accommodate rare books.
More recently, Lovell Chen developed a concept design for
the 'Transformer' — a solution to the challenge of providing facilities suited to 21st century requirements in the student's rooms without impacting unacceptably on the building's historic fabric.
