client The University of Melbourne
Lovell Chen designed the adaptation and refurbishment of the Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne. The Museum, constructed in 1935 to a design by Gawler and Drummond, is a memorial to its founder — Melbourne-born composer and pianist Percy Aldridge Grainger — and a repository for his collection of compositions, recordings and artefacts.
The new works include alterations to the east gallery, the creation of a new rear courtyard café, conservation of the original brickwork façades and concrete roof, and a comprehensive upgrade of services to achieve the curatorial requirements of a museum space. The new landscape works were designed by Oculus Landscape Architecture and Urban Design.
The project was short listed in 2010 for an Australian Institute of Architects Award (Victorian Chapter) in the Heritage category.
