COMMONWEALTH GAMES VILLAGE
architecture + interiors   conservation works
Royal Park, Melbourne
client  Village Park Consortium
The former Royal Park Hospital complex was the site of the
athletes' village for the XVIII Commonwealth Games (Melbourne 2006). As well as refubishment work for the project, we developed conservation and management policies to guide the sympathetic adaptation of individual buildings and the redevelopment of the site as a whole.
The refubishment work focused on the former wards and nurses' accommodation buildings, which is where the athletes lived. They consist of linked pavilions dating from the early 20th century. These were restored externally and adapted internally for immediate use. After the Games, the idea is that they be further adapted and sold as apartments.
This project required the design and documentation of both the temporary and permanent works, each with quite specific accommodation requirements.
