Circus Oz are based in two interesting buildings in Port Melbourne.
Their offices are in a former post office and their practice space is in an adjoining former Navy drill hall. We were asked to explore options for the expansion and refurbishment of their accommodation, with the primary aim of improving the facilities in the hall. They wanted to find a way of increasing the height of the space to allow the trapeze artistes room to manoeuvre.
The most important aspect of the project was the
extensive consultation process we undertook together with the resolution of a master plan supported by both management and the performers, many of whom had very diverging views.
The plan has provided the organization with a strategy for
its continued operation on the site, even though heritage constraints have meant that the design modifications proposed for the hall have not been pursued. It provides a detailed list of progressive improvement works that can be implemented as funding becomes available.
